Rules & FAQ
Jan. 25th, 2021 12:08 amWhat is Vidding Prompts?
Vidding Prompts is a year long, super casual prompt meme for vidders. Anyone can leave a prompt, and anyone can make a vid in response. There are no official signups, claims, or deadlines. The intent is to provide a fun, low-pressure space for vidding inspiration.
CURRENTLY OPEN FOR PROMPTS!
How will it work?
For ease of use, prompts will be collected using the "Prompt Meme" function on AO3.
Vidders can then browse the listed prompts and see if one takes their fancy. Since there are no official claims, the vidder does not need to sign up, they just make the vid.
Where is it located?
The current prompt meme can be found on AO3 and is called Keep Calm & Vid On, not to be confused with the parent AO3 collection called Vidding Prompt Meme, which will be used to house the sub-collections for the yearly prompt memes.
Vidding Prompts can also be found on various social channels. Follow these for announcements and vid related content. However, please note that prompts will only be available on AO3.
Tumblr, Discord, Twitter & YouTube will be coming soon.
Who can leave prompts?
Anyone! You do not need to be a vidder to leave a prompt, however, you will need an AO3 account. If you don’t have an AO3 account and would like an invite, click here.
Please note that leaving a prompt does not guarantee that you will receive a vid. And if you do receive a vid, there is also no guarantee that it will follow every specific aspect of your prompt.
Please read the Prompter FAQ below for more information before leaving a prompt.
Who can claim prompts?
Anyone! Since there are no "official" claims, you will not need an AO3 account but one may be useful to keep track of your claims. If you don’t have an AO3 account and would like an invite, click here.
When will it run?
There is no official schedule as the plan is to keep the prompt meme running indefinitely if all goes well.
To keep things organised and to avoid the list of prompts getting out of control, a new AO3 collection to run the prompt meme will be created each year. The previous collection will be then be closed to new prompts but you will still be able to submit vids for existing prompts.
You will also be free to resubmit your prompts to the new collection if they didn’t get filled.
If I leave a prompt, what kind of vid can I expect to get?
Firstly, you may not get a vid at all. This is not an official exchange and therefore no specific assignments will be handed out. Vidders are free to choose or ignore prompts at their leisure.
Secondly, there are very few vid requirements that vidders are required to follow when fulfilling a prompt. For more information, please read the Vidder FAQ but a brief summary is as follows:
Additionally, all prompts are public and can be picked up by any vidder. You will not have any direction or influence over what vid they create (unless the vidder chooses otherwise).
If any of the above bothers you, then you should not leave a prompt.
How do I leave a prompt?
As mentioned, you will need an AO3 account to leave a prompt. Click here if you do not have one.
What can I nominate in the Fandoms field?
You can nominate any kind of source in your prompt including non-footage fandoms such as books and graphics.
You can also leave multi-fandom prompts by using the “Multi-Fandom” tag or simply nominating multiple sources.
You are required to nominate at least 1 fandom and can list up to 10. If you want to list more than 10 fandoms, you may want to consider using the “Multi-Fandom” tag and listing the fandoms in the "Description" field.
In cases of fandoms with multiple tags ie. Marvel where you have the overarching “Marvel Cinematic Universe” tag and then tags for individual movies and series, don’t worry about choosing every single applicable tag since there is no official assignment matching going on that will use them. Just list what you think is the most appropriate tag for the vid you want.
What should I include in the Description field?
Leave a description of the vid you would like to receive. This can include information such as:
You may also consider leaving a method of contact in case the vidder has any questions or would like to discuss the vid with you. You can leave an email address, ask to be messaged on Tumblr or Dreamwidth, etc, or direct them to check your AO3 profile (provided you have listed your contact details there).
Does the vidder have to include everything in my prompt?
No, as this is not a formal exchange with assignments, the vidder does not have to follow every suggestion in your prompt.
The only exception is adhering to your DNW list as previously described.
How many prompts can I leave?
You can leave up to 20 prompts.
Can I change my prompts after I sign up?
AO3 allows you to delete, add, or modify your prompts at any time as long as prompting is open. However, please note that if you do so, a vidder may have already started a vid and may not see your changes to be able to take them into consideration.
Can my prompts be deleted?
You have the option to delete any of your prompts at any time for any reason. Please note that if a vidder has all ready started a vid based on your prompt, they will still be allowed to finish their vid and post to the collection.
The admins also reserve the right to delete any prompts for any reason.
Can prompts be anonymous?
Prompts can be semi-anonymous in which they will publicly appear anonymous but the admins will still be able to see who you are. While the admins have no intention of revealing your name for any reason, there is no way to remain completely anonymous.
You can enable this option by clicking the “Semi-Anonymous Prompt?” checkbox on the prompt form.
What happens if a vidder fulfils my prompt but includes an item from my DNW list?
If the vidder made an honest mistake ie. they misread your DNW list, then the work will be unlinked from your profile so it no longer appears as a gift to you but it will remain in the Collection. (You are also able to refuse the gift yourself in AO3.)
If it is discovered that the vidder knowingly fulfilled your prompt on AO3 with a vid that includes items from your DNW list, or notified you directly about the vid, then the vidder will be banned from all prompt meme related communities and their work will be removed from being listed in the Collection.
Please note that we do not have the ability to delete the vid or prevent the vidder from viewing any future prompts you leave.
If either of the above situations occurs, please contact us immediately.
Also note that while works submitted to the AO3 collection will be monitored, they will not be moderated and if a situation like the above occurs, you may see and watch the vid before it is flagged. If your DNW list contains serious triggers you may want to reconsider leaving a prompt.
How do I find the prompts?
All prompts will be listed in the prompt meme on AO3 (Keep Calm and Vid On). Simply click on Prompts in the left hand column to view them. You can sort by Fandom, Prompter or Date but unfortunately there is no way to filter the prompts further.
There is no official close date for submitting prompts so you may want to check back periodically to see the new prompts.
How do I claim a prompt?
There is no official process to claim a prompt. If you see a prompt you like, just go ahead and make the vid.
However, if you have an AO3 account, feel free to click the “Claim” button to the bottom right of the prompt to make it easier to keep track of your prompts. This does not constitute an “official” claim (because there aren’t any) and you are not required to finish a vid just because you claimed it.
If you don’t have an AO3 account but would like an invite, click here.
How many prompts can I claim?
As many as you want. I won’t be checking and there are no penalties for not fulfilling a claim.
Can multiple people claim the same prompt?
Yes, there is no limit to the number of claims or vids that a single prompt may have.
Can I claim a prompt if I didn’t submit any prompts?
Yes.
What happens if I claim a prompt and don’t finish a vid?
Nothing! There are no penalties and no deadlines. While the AO3 collection will close for new prompts at the end of the year, it will still remain open for you to claim or submit vids to.
What happens if I claim a prompt and someone else finishes a vid for it first?
Doesn't matter. The more vids the better.
Will the vids be anonymous?
No, there is no anonymity period as you typically see in exchanges. You can post your vid on your normal social profiles and include signed credits in the vid itself.
What is the minimum vid length?
There is no minimum vid length. You can create a vid that is 10 seconds long if you want.
The only vid requirement is that you must submit a “complete” vid, meaning you can’t just take a 10 second clip out of an existing unfinished vid and submit that.
If you submit a 10 second vid, it has to be for a vid concept that actually only needs 10 seconds.
If I claim a prompt, do I have to incorporate everything listed in the prompt?
No, the prompt is just that, a prompt. You are not required to include everything listed and you can create whatever vid you are inspired to. (The only exception to this is the DNW list as explained in the next question).
However, I am counting on everyone to follow a bit of an honour system here where if you end up creating a vid that strays too far from the initial prompt, do not submit it for the prompt so the original prompter doesn’t get disappointed. Feel free to still submit the vid to the parent AO3 Ccown.org/collections/ViddingPromptMeme" target="_blank">Vidding Prompt Meme) and you can even let the original prompter know that there might be a vid they are interested in but don’t "officially" gift it to them (unless the prompter decides after all that they like it).
If I claim a prompt, do I have to abide by a Do Not Want (DNW) list if it is included?
Yes, you are required to abide by any DNW lists that the prompter may include but only if you intend to post your vid directly to AO3 in response to their prompt, using the "fulfil" function and/or gifting or dedicating the vid to them.
If you end up making a vid that is inspired by a prompt but conflicts with a DNW list then you should not use the "fulfil" function on AO3, gift the vid to the prompter or even let the prompter know that you made the vid.
You are still allowed to make and post your vid, just submit it to the parent AO3 collection (Vidding Prompt Meme) instead.
If it is discovered that you knowingly submitted or gifted a vid to a prompter that conflicts with their DNW list, you will be banned from all the Vidding Prompt Meme related communities and your work will be removed from the collection on AO3.
Can I work with the Prompter to make my vid?
Absolutely, provided the prompter is willing. If the prompter has left contact details in their prompt, feel free to start a conversation with them but the Vidding Prompt Meme will not facilitate this.
How do I submit my finished vid?
There are no formal requirements for submitting a vid. Post as you normally would, on whatever platforms you like but there are some additional actions listed below that you can take to increase exposure for your vid.
However, before posting, please double check the original prompt to make sure your final vid does not conflict with any Do Not Want (DNW) items that may be listed. If your vid does conflict, please follow the alternate instructions below.

If you are posting to AO3:
- If your vid does not conflict with any DNW items, make sure you have hit the "Claim" button on the prompt. Then go to the top of the page and click on "Post" to create a new work. If you scroll down the page, you should see the claim listed in the "Associations" section. Make sure the checkbox is ticked for the appropriate prompt.
- If you do this, you do not need to fill in the "Post to Collections" field, this will happen automatically.
- However, you will need to add the prompter's name to the "Gift this work to" field because this does not happen automatically.
- Doing this will ensure the prompter gets automatically notified about the vid you made.
- If your vid strays too far from the prompt (but doesn't conflict with any DNW lists), please submit your vid to the parent AO3 collection by clicking here. This will automatically pre-fill the "Post to Collections" field. Feel free to notify the prompter by other means that there may be a vid they might like, but don't gift the vid to them on AO3 unless they want you to.
- If your vid conflicts with a DNW item, please also submit your vid to the parent AO3 collection by clicking here. This will automatically pre-fill the "Post to Collections" field. But do not notify the prompter of the vid by gifting it to them or communicating with them by other means.
If you are posting (or cross-posting) to Dreamwidth:
- If you post to AO3, you vid will automatically get included in a monthly round-up of new vids, posted to
viddingprompts. If your vid gets accidentally missed or you do not intend to post on AO3, feel free to comment on the last newsletter post with a link to your vid to get included in the next one. - You can also promote your vid on
vidding or any fandom specific community that exists (provided they accept vids).
If you are posting (or cross-posting) to Tumblr:
- Post your vid on Tumblr with #viddingpromptmeme listed in the first 5 tags so it can be reblogged by
viddingprompts
- Please note that your post will not appear in any tags if you include an external link in the post. I know, tumblr is dumb.
- If you know the prompter has a Tumblr, also consider tagging their name in the post (provided your vid does not conflict with any DNW items in their prompt).
If you are posting (or cross-posting) to Discord, Twitter or YouTube:
- Stay tuned! Information for these channels will be add once they are setup.
